“When people cannot give power to the law, they give right to the force” (Blaise Pascal).
In 1927, Les Kurbas, the founder of the modern national Ukrainian-European style theatre presented the play by Nikolay Kulish “The People's Malakhii”. It is an acute ruthless satire on the post-revolutionary reality in the Soviet Ukraine with deep and tragic dissonance between the slogans of the revolution and the real consequences. The author tried to answer the following question: is it possible to implement a romantic-utopian ideology using totalitarian methods?
Kurbas’s play “The People's Malakhii” on Kulish is among the 100 best performances of the 20th century. The authors of the film try to draw a parallel between the classic play of the 1920s and the present. Executed, but unconquered!
